I'm a Cowbridge-based potter making crystalline glazed ceramics. This is an unusual technique, with only a handful of potters producing them in Britain. The crystals form naturally in the surface of the glaze as a result of the chemicals used and occur at random across the piece. The selected chemicals determine the crystal shapes and colours, which can be monochrome or contrasting, while the firing schedule will influence the size, pattern and number of the crystals. Each piece is therefore unique and special.
